When to call a language service provider
When communication is hampered because of limited language proficiency and casual bilingual assistance is not sufficient to guarantee complete understanding, the services of a language service provider are required.
What type of service do I need?
- Interpreters - work with the verbal communication
- Translators - work with the written communication
Level of Language Services
Language services scale upward or downward in proportion to the level of complexity or liability that the encounter or document may represent.
For example a client may not require the services of a certified court interpreter to assist in transporting someone to a medical appointment; in this case a Bilingual Community Liaison would be the adequate selection.
In a different case, the use of a general translator for the translation of a literary document may not be sufficient, because that particular task will require a higher level of subject matter specialization.
Interpreters and translators are placed under specific categories based on their qualifications which contain the following factors:
- Level of training and certification
- Level of skills for complex assignments
- Specific Industry expertise
- Knowledge of rare language
- Years of experience
